I have finally secured my mentorship and it is going wonderful. I am so relieved to have established this relationship with Dr. Correa. I could not have asked for a better person to guide me through my ISM journey. Last week, I focused my research assessment on the insanity defense, which is what I have decided to declare as my original work topic. I decided that this is the perfect concept to study, because it is interesting, relevant, and controversial. By this, I mean that many people who are unfamiliar with the reality of insanity and mens rea are misguided by the media due to the abuse of the term as well as the depictions in film.
Also on the topic of my studies is clinical assessment and malingering. It is often thought that criminals can get out of prison time by simply pleading insanity. Although the system and forensic evaluators are not perfect, there are objective measures that are taken to assess the validity of these claims. It used to be taboo to question an individual’s self-prescribed illness or capacity, but psychological research is constantly studying these behaviors and can recognize that an objective basis for evaluation is necessary to prevent injustice. Monday the third is my first mentor visit and will help me establish my goals of my mentorship.
