The past week consisted predominantly of reaching out to make connections. I have faced a setback due to the packed schedules of many professionals that I have reached out to, which I initially saw to be discouraging. I had to remind myself that the entire ISM program is a learning experience, even if it may seem otherwise while in the moment. I believe that challenges, both in life and in the classroom, are truly the most valuable learning periods, because it allows us to reflect on our tactics and assess our strengths and weaknesses.
Last week, I set a goal for myself to reach out to about 2-3 people by the end of the week. Although I could have challenged myself more, I managed to reach my goals after all and even exceeded them.
I received a very thoughtful response from a doctor who is currently working in Hawaii on a military case which is her area of specialty. She provided me with a referral site of forensic psychologists, which I will utilize this week, and also took the time to compliment me on the etiquette of my request. It was valuable to receive the approval of someone that I tend to look up to and respect so greatly.
Both the cold calls and the emails have taught me more about leaving my comfort zone and putting myself out there. I can conclude that there is a silver lining in every step of the way. This week, I will commit myself to reaching out to twice as many people.
